Over the years, advanced inventions have been made in wildlife photography. In the 1980s, innovators from the Remote Imaging lab at National Geographic headquarters developed 8-millimeter camcorders that were waterproof. The cameras were used to take photographs targeting aquatic animals at their natural habitat. The fantastic aspects of the cameras were that they would be attached on the backs of turtles and seals without affecting their daily lives. The cameras were used as trail cameras to film the interactions between animals as well as their distinct daily lives in water. Unlike the first cameras that produced flash to alert the animals, these cameras were not detectable, ensuring animals were filmed incognito.

Crittercams

In 2005, a more advanced form of a waterproof camera was developed; it’s called Crittercams. They were used to film the Penguins’ march for the first time. They produced one of the most amazing documentaries detailing the annual migration of penguins. The camera was instrumental in revealing the mating rituals of penguins. The mother lays the egg and leaves it at the care of the father as she goes out to feed and searching food for the hatched chicks. The initial crittercams could not withstand deep pressure. A new version was later developed to withstand up to 3000 pounds of pressure per square inch. They were attached to the sperm whale and used to film their deep-sea hunting that was not possible using the conventional cameras.
